Inclusion and SEND

Pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities thrive at our school. We know that all pupils are different and we create an inclusive, nurturing environment for everybody by knowing our pupils and their needs well. Providing pupils with SEND with the tools that they need to be succesful is built-in, not bolt-on, to our curriculum. 

Each pupil with SEND has a Pupil Profile. The Pupil Profile is created with the SENDCo, Class Teacher, parents or carers, and the pupil themselves, and is reviewed three times per year in a collaborative meeting between families and school. 

The Pupil Profile details the pupils' strengths, interests and academic achievement. It also shows any areas that the pupil finds more difficult, or where they are struggling, and strategies that can be implemented by school staff to support them. Class Teachers are then responsible for providing scaffolds or interventions as detailed on the Pupil Profile.

The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is an allocation of funds for pupils from lower income families. Pupils with access to the PPG can benefit in a number of ways. As a school, we believe that equality of opportunity is paramount in education and that there is nothing that should stop all of our pupils soaring high. We strive for excellence for all of our pupils, regardless of their circumstances. 

Some ways we are spending PPG funding to improve opportunities for individual pupils are: 

• 1:1 or small group tutoring in school with an experienced teacher
• Music lessons, both individual and through RockSteady 
• Sports and Drama after-school clubs
• Providing uniform and P.E. kit
• Wraparound care provision, including breakfast and after-school club

At Beckley, pupils who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL) are provided with all of the tools they need to access our curriculum succesfully. 

During the academic year 2021-2022, a number of new pupils joined our school from Ukraine. 10% of our pupil population is now Ukrainian, and our response to this has been to develop a programme of EAL provision that encourages our pupils to achieve exceptionally in school. 

We now have an EAL teacher who works with pupils across all year groups. During English lessons, pupils with little or no English work through a separate curriculum to develop their reading, writing and speaking skills. They join their class for every other subject, where our EAL teacher supports other teachers to provide resources and scaffolds to ensure that all pupils can access the curriculum in English.
